It's not bitterness that breeds the sentiment; it's the heart-wrenching understanding that you didn't even realize what you had. Ugh.

And Chris, would you ever dream of going to all that trouble now? I think about some of the stupidity I endured, mostly out of pride and stubbornness, and I just chuckle and shake my head. Wow. Chalk it all up to experience, eh?Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01886668831972641673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7663468186545705233.post-19851118202167201112010-11-16T09:01:09.960-05:002010-11-16T09:01:09.960-05:00This makes me remember my own experiences as a lat...This makes me remember my own experiences as a late-teen and 20-something with summer jobs in Oakland -- riding 2 buses each way to get there every day (trying to avoid the crazies on the downtown-to-Oakland buses). Who was that fresh-faced little thing??? I remember being grateful when the whole tennis-shoes-with-suits craze started for women because you could actually get to work without killing your feet.chris h.http://www.writingbyear.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7663468186545705233.post-53021583725782556322010-11-14T19:54:11.918-05:002010-11-14T19:54:11.918-05:00"I wish, sometimes, I could keep my liberated..."I wish, sometimes, I could keep my liberated old self while still maintaining that girl's energy and expectation. Is that possible?"

Are you familiar with the expression, "Youth is wasted on the young."? When I was young (teens and twenties), I thought that the impetus for that expression was just old people being bitter about being old. But then in my thirties, I came to a whole new understanding of that expression. I've never been one of those people who wants to relive their "glory days" and be young again (high school? Ugh! No thanks.). But as a more mature person, I came to understand that there are great things about being young, but when you're young, you don't realize that they're great, and that it's very likely you will lose them as you age. Hence, "youth" -- the good parts -- "are wasted on the young." I love that expression now. ;-)

- ShellAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
